Abia Police Arrest Man Seen in Viral Video Assaulting Woman

The Abia State Police Command has arrested a man captured in a viral video allegedly assaulting a woman during a dispute over a pot of soup, with authorities saying he will face charges of assault and attempted murder.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa.

According to the statement, the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Agwu Ukpo from Akanu Ohafia in Abia State, was apprehended by operatives of the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit following intelligence-led investigations.

“Leveraging on actionable intelligence, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit, Abia Command, have apprehended the above-mentioned suspect, who was captured in a viral video assaulting one Amarachi Chiyere over a dispute relating to a pot of soup,” the statement read.

The police said the matter is currently being investigated by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), adding that the suspect would be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The Command strongly condemned the incident, describing the suspect’s actions as barbaric and inhumane, while stressing that violence of any form would not be tolerated.

It also urged residents to refrain from acts of violence and seek lawful means of resolving disputes.

“The Command remains fully committed to ensuring justice is served in the state and that perpetrators of crime will be made to face the full weight of the law,” the statement added.
