Former Vice President and ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed sympathy with residents of Lagos State following the devastating flooding that affected several parts of the State after heavy rainfall over the weekend.
In a statement posted on his official Facebook page on Tuesday evening, Atiku conveyed his condolences to individuals and businesses affected by the flooding, saying this was the time to stand united in support of one another together.
“I extend my heartfelt sympathy to the people of Lagos who have been affected by the ongoing flooding. My thoughts are with the families, motorists, commuters, business owners and everyone whose lives and livelihoods were disrupted by this unfortunate event.
“At moments like this, we are reminded of the strength of our shared humanity and the importance of standing together in support of one another. I pray for the safety of all, for a swift return to normalcy,” he stated.
Atiku’s message comes amid growing public frustration over the recurring flooding in Lagos, following a prolonged downpour that swept across the state since Sunday.
The heavy rainfall, which lasted for several hours, inundated major roads and communities, leaving many residents stranded and causing significant disruptions to transportation and daily activities across the metropolis.
Several parts of the state, including Gbagada, Iyana Ipaja, Ikorodu Road, Ikeja, Maryland, Mushin, Ogudu, Lekki, Oshodi, Agege, Alimosho and Obalende, were affected by the flooding, with many commuters forced to trek long distances after commercial transport services were disrupted by rising floodwaters.
The situation also impacted air travel operations, leading to the temporary closure of a terminal at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
The flooding has reignited concerns among residents, with many calling for urgent and sustainable measures to address the recurring problem, especially during the peak of the rainy season.
