Concerns are growing over the continued detention of activist and researcher, Ibrahim Bichia Maisango, by the Department of State Services (DSS), following reports that he has remained in custody for more than three weeks after honouring an invitation by the agency.
In a telephone interview with his wife, Hauwa Mundi, she said that, to the best of her knowledge, Maisango was arrested for his social media activities, in which he writes to awaken the conscience of northerners, especially the Hausa people.
She stated that the DSS has not been able to tell them the reason for the arrest of the husband, and the family is eagerly waiting for his release or arraignment in court.
She had earlier stated that the husband was invited to the DSS headquarters in Abuja on 2 June 2026 and has not regained his freedom since then.
His wife disclosed that family members were denied access to him for two weeks and were not provided with any official communication regarding the reasons for his detention during that period.
She said she was eventually allowed to see him after two weeks, but expressed concern about his health condition, describing it as troubling.
She said, “The condition in which I met him is worrying, and calls for greater transparency regarding his continued detention.”
In a message conveyed through his wife, Maisango expressed appreciation to supporters who have continued to campaign for his release.
“Saura kiris mu shaki iskar yanci. Nagode,” he said, a Hausa expression loosely translated as “We are close to breathing the air of freedom. Thank you.
The development has intensified calls from supporters and civil rights advocates for clarity on the circumstances surrounding his detention, with many demanding that the DSS either charge him in court or release him.
Maisango, popularly known as IBM, is a prominent Nigerian public figure, researcher, and activist who champions the historical rights and cultural heritage of indigenous Hausa communities.
He has built a reputation as a vocal commentator on socio-political issues, frequently advocating accountability, justice and greater recognition of Hausa history and identity.
His activism, particularly on matters relating to traditional leadership, regional politics and ethnic identity in Northern Nigeria, has earned him a significant following while also generating controversy and criticism from some quarters.
His detention has sparked an online campaign under the hashtag #FreeBichiaMaisango, drawing attention from supporters who argue that his continued custody raises concerns about freedom of expression and due process.
Meanwhile, the DSS sources to LEADERSHIP that he will be arraigned in court soon, even as the security police did not reveal the reason for his arrest or when he will be arraigned.
